At first it is easy just to search the net and find as many spells as you can, and although they may work for you (and they will), they will never be as good as those you craft yourself.

Why? well basically you get out what you put in, a spell you craft yourself, whilst focusing your whole mind on its intention, will have more power, because its YOUR mind that is creating the change with all the tools at your command.
But! where do I start? comes the cry, and my answer is, with other peoples spells, study them, research why they used this herb or that planetary hour, what are the correspondenses that make it the right spell for protection, or cleansing?, why those ingredients?dissect them , down to their basic elements , its good practice, and then you can rebuild them from the ground up, learning to construct a good , neat, specific spell.

I will stress "specific" ,loosely constructed spells, either don't work, or work in a way you may not have intended them too, attention to detail is necessary in good spell construction, it doesn't need to be long winded, just well prepared and precise.

Start with simple magic such as protection, prosperity, cleansing, but remember that just as nature abhors a vaccum, so does magic, work towards a balance, when repelling harm, invite in joy at the same time, when cleansing out bad vibes, call in harmony, with prosperity spells be precise about the source, no-one wants their favourite aunt to die and leave them all their money. If your spell answers your desire, remember it is polite to give a gift in return, drop a pound in the nearest donation tin, when wild-crafting herbs ask permission first, and leave a coin or crystal to the plant in thanks. Of course if you ask for the help of any diety in your crafting, remember to pour a libation, or light some incense in thanks.

One last point to be made, your Book Of Shadows isn't just a pretty collection of spells and rituals, it should be a working diary, of what you did, when, and how, and the results, and i will repeat , if something doesn't work, try a different route.
I like to keep my "best" BOS for those things that become my favourites, or work particularly well, so i keep two or three others for rough drafting, research and dream diaries, and of course put the whole thing on my hard drive , just so that i can lose it.
(you cannot beat a hand written BOS)
